Rules on fictious/self-published symbols?

[edit]

When I looked at Category:Bundism (and it's associated symbols of bundism cat) it was full of self-made or fictional symbols created seemingly inspired by real symbols, but are themselves without any example of real world use in themselves. all of the files in question have the contributor as the author and have no provided source or instance of real life use to imply that they are digititsations of real flags/symbols

I took to removing all the catagories from them, but realised this might not have been the right course of action as I mostly spend my time on other wikimedia projects, and only interact with Commons secondary to that. Is what I did the correct course of action or was there something else I should have done. Additionally, what are the rules regaring entirely fictious/self-published symbols and their catagorisation. Thank you Bejakyo (talk) 21:05, 8 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Convenience link: Category:Bundism, but you say you've removed that so this won't even help anyone find the files you are talking about.
As a rule, fictitious stuff made up by the uploader has no educational value and is therefore out of scope. (There are a handful of exceptions, like creating a Wikimedia barnstar, but that does not appear to be what we are talking about here.) Even user-made illustrations of real-world things have to pass a high bar. If the files were out of scope, you should have nominated them for deletion. Killing categories just makes it hard to work out what files you are talking about. - Jmabel ! talk 06:06, 9 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I hadn't even thought about linking to the work. the works I'm talking about are here and [[1]] Bejakyo (talk) 17:19, 9 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks.
Let's start with one of them before I make any assumptions. @Grasyl: can you explain how File:Bundist Logo with 3 arrows symmetric BUND cc BY-SA 4.0 by Grasyl.svg would be in scope as educational? Because to me it looks quite the opposite: actively misleading to anyone who sees it reused in almost any context. - Jmabel ! talk 23:41, 9 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I saw a similar logo in old material about Bundism, I have no longer access to. The original source was black and white so I had to guess the colors according to the popular Bundist flag. I know that the popular flag is also in question of being historical, recently.
Feel free to remove the categories and add a note, that it is not as historical as people think. --Grasyl (talk) 17:35, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How do you make a tropical cyclone image?

[edit]

How do you make a tropical cyclone image? Can you install the GIMP? I used https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/ I'm using Windows. Thanks. Ampil (Talk - Contributions) 09:57, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ampil.
What exactly are you trying to do?
I think you can click the camera icon in worldview (they call it "Take a snapshot"), download the jpg and upload that to Commons. If you want to crop or edit that jpg before uploading to Commons you could install the GIMP and make changes before uploading to Commons.
File:Kirrily 2024-01-25 0330Z.jpg was made this way I guess. If you want to make a cyclone path/track image like File:Kirrily 2024 path.png you can follow the instructions in the Source part on that file's description page.
The folks at w:Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tropical cyclones may be able to help also. Commander Keane (talk) 08:39, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@OoraliJourney as the English Wikipedia Help desk and Teahouse are currently locked from new editors posting questions perhaps that is why you asked here! It can be confusing to differentiate projects when you are new, but this is the file repository Wikimedia Commons and you want a Wikipedia instead.
If you try to ask a question at those pages it gives instructions to add the wikicode source code "{{Help me}}" to your English Wikipedia user talk page (here) and someone visit and help. If it was concerning a different language Wikipedia you will need find their Help desk, there may be using a link in the sidebar of this page, or a language selector icon at the top. Good luck :-). Original lyrics set to existing melody

[edit]

I wrote a song that explains the mathematical definition of a "group" to help students remember the definition. The lyrics are original, but the song is set to the tune of "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen. I recorded myself playing the song on my guitar - the arrangement is my own. Can I upload this to Wikimedia Commons and embed in the Wikipedia article "Group (mathematics)"? Graemalkin (talk) 15:06, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Graemalkin: no, the tune is copyrighted and I can't imagine you could get Leonard Cohen's estate to free-license what is probably their most valuable asset. - Jmabel ! talk 16:46, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi all,

The Latymer School in Edmonton has a logo which is the coat of arms of the Latymer Family, how would I go about uploading the newest HD version of the logo? Technically it was first created in 1561 so does that mean it counts towards "author has been dead for 70 years" or no? The Watcher5292 (talk) 18:21, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@The Watcher5292 Hello and welcome, are you referring to the coat of arms in File:All Saints, Church Street, Edmonton - Memorial.jpg? I’m not familiar with UK copyright laws, but I notice that there are slight differences between the school logo and the coat of arms, so it could be a problem with COM:TOO UK. Maybe someone more knowledgeable on this can comment? Tvpuppy (talk) 18:48, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! See I thought so too, but at the same time I do also know that the logo historically has always been the heraldry of the founder Edward Latymer himself, so I wouldve thought that due to that factor it would be under fair use, or even public domain to some extent.
The logo we see today was created circa 2013 as a illustrator trace for the website and documents (I know this because i use to work there), so it was certainly original to that extent, but yeah maybe someone with a bit more know could help out?
The Latymer Upper School has its customised logo on display, so i wouldnt thought it would have the same logic The Watcher5292 (talk) 20:06, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@The Watcher5292, my (weak) understanding is that in heraldry the idea and description of the coat of arms can fall into public domain, 1561 is fine for that. However,
modern recreations will generate their own copyright (depending on creativity, COM:TOO UK is mentioned above). To get around this Commons creators find the original description or photo of a public domain version and create their own work and freely licence it. They often do this as a SVG file that has scalable/infinite resolution. Fair use is not permitted on Commons, but may be accepted on some projects like English Wikipedia under some circumstances. Commons:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology doesn't seem to discuss copyright, but someone there may be able to make a file for you. Commander Keane (talk) 20:34, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If The Watcher5292 is correct that this falls under "fair use", then it may *not* be uploaded to Commons. I am guessing that this was just a misuse of that expression. - Jmabel ! talk 05:54, 13 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The file you upload should only use this if you are transferring a file that already uses this license. This shouldn’t be used on newly created files, as the license is retired by Creative Commons. Yes, you can do this with any attribution license and you can specify the credits to be anything you want like done here  REAL 💬   05:44, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Vhasselblad, if I understand you correctly you can add your photo (we call it "Upload") to Wikimedia Commons and include your credit line on the file description page, we can help with that.
However, when reusing the file, other wikis probably will not include your credit line in the wiki page (displayed near the file), they expect people to click the photo to see the author.
English Wikipedia, for example, certainly doesn't display credit lines on article pages.
This is due to interpretation of the terms of the free licenses that Wikimedia Commons uses and are compulsory for uploading a file here. Commander Keane (talk) 23:12, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Vhasselblad: You uploaded File:Peter Pfrunder viewing Marcel Bolomet Archive at Archivalimage Gallery, Northridge, CA. 2017.jpg and gave your name in the description field of the info template. However in the author field you gave your user name. Therefore your user name has been copied into the SDC author info. Is that the way you want it? Or was it your intention to have your real name in the author field of the info template and in the SDC author field. The way it is, only your user name will be attributed if your foto gets reused. If you are the creator as you claimed, you will need to get verified by emailing COM:VRT.
You don’t have to worry about the images being previously deleted since they can be easily restored if you have been verified successfully. If you have any more questions, feel free to reply below. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 17:09, 16 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Probably the phrase "emailing COM:VRT" is a little hard for someone who is not already an experienced Commons user.
There is a group here on Commons (and on other WMF wikis) called the "Volunteer Response Team." The Commons community trusts them to handle confidential correspondence. The page COM:VRT explains the process by which you can contact them to confirm that you hold particular copyrights and are granting particular licenses. I believe you can use this same process to establish who you are as the owner of a particular account, but I'm less sure how that works. If/when you email them, you should probably ask about being able to upload further photographs of your own works without having to repeat this email process. - Jmabel ! talk 01:27, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Can I upload the picture of a deceased person from their obituary to illustrate their wikipedia page ?

[edit]

There is a Wikipedia article about a transgender person which is illustrated with a pre-transition old picture. This person is deceased and deserve an accurate image that represent who they were.

There is a picture from their official obituary on a website (it's an online obituary), can i upload it and use it to replace the current image on the Wikipedia article dedicated to that transgender person? Lièvre de mer (talk) 18:20, 16 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No, you can't, as long as the actual photographer possibly retains the copyright to the image in question. You'd have to clarify the situation with their heirs or said photographer to get a clear answer who own these rights now. If an exclusive license got transferred to the now-deceased individual, then the heirs would be able to release it, if it was a non-exclusive license, then the photographer is the one to ask. how to undelete my media?

[edit]

I'm new on wiki i unknownwingly uploadead historical paintings as own which is now deleted i want to recover RyanRai11 (talk) 03:22, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@RyanRai11: it would be very useful if you could say what file or files this is about and what era the works are from.
Of recent deletions, File:Maharaja Sir Krishna Pratap Bahadur Shahi,KCIE of Hathwa Raj.jpg does not appear to be a painting and is not obviously old enough to be public domain; File:Maharaja Balwant Singh of Banaras.jpg is probably worth undeleting if we can date it as being early enough to know it is public domain; File:Maharaja Fateh Bahadur Shahi, Hathwa and Tamkuhi Raj.jpg is probably old enough to be public domain, but is a low enough quality image to be of questionable value.
In any case, the usual place to ask for undeletions is Commons:Undeletion requests. - Jmabel ! talk 04:59, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
i take those both pictures from the decendents of those in my DM. they permit me to use those RyanRai11 (talk) 08:34, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@RyanRai11: That is fine, but not relevant.
There are two bases on which we can host content on Commons:
  1. The image is is in the public domain. Based on Copyright_law_of_India, for India, this would mean:
    • any photograph created before 21 January 1958
    • any photograph published before 1 January 1965. This date will advance one year each calendar year.
    • any artistic work (not a photograph) published anonymously before 1 January 1965. This means that no name was ever associated with the work, not that we don't happen to know whose it is. Normally, to show this, we'd have to actually know where it was originally published and show that no name was associated with that. This date will advance one year each calendar year.
    • any artistic work (not a photograph) whose author is known to have died before 1 January 1965. This requires knowing the author and their date of death. This date will advance one year each calendar year.
    • There are some other cases, but they don't seem to apply to the sort of materials you have uploaded.
  2. The image is copyrighted, and the rightful copyright holder has granted a COM:L free license.
    • Typically, the copyright holder would be the photographer/artist or the heir to that person's intellectual property.
    • Note that this has nothing to do with who might be the subject of the photograph/painting.
    • For a discussion of how such a license can be proven, see COM:VRT.

can u tell me how i can upload old historical images not created by me but there is no copy right issue with that RyanRai11 (talk) 12:20, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@RyanRai11: for people who don't know their own way through this, we usually recommend using Commons:UploadWizard. If there are particular steps there that you don't understand, please be more specific with your question.
Also, Commons:Uploading works by a third party is still a little unfinished, but the part related to this case should be solid, and you might want to read it. - Jmabel ! talk 16:03, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Image from a private family album

[edit]

For an entry on a person (close to family) I would like to use a photo of that person from the 1950s from the family album. The family agrees, but the author himself is no longer alive. how can we handle that properly? The brother of the author is still alive. Would he be the official heir? Artistic*researcher (talk) 17:29, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Artistic*researcher: Who is the heir to the author's intellectual property? (If no one was explicitly so designated, that would be the heir to the residuum of the author's estate.) That is who needs to go through the COM:VRT process. - Jmabel ! talk 00:47, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It sounds like some agreement can be made. If you are one of multiple heirs in the family, if they all agree that you are the soul heir to that photo or photo album and can do what you like with it with no competing claims, you can license it as heir (eg {{PD-heirs}} or {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}) -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 01:11, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Chiti Abraira: Hola y bienvenido.

Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png image as a new user. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 20:04, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures of Stolpersteine

[edit]

There are many pictures of Stolpersteine already here in Commons, e. g.: Category:Stolpersteine in Stuttgart-Mitte.
I took pictures of three more such stones. But I am hesitating to upload them because when I use the upload wizard, I am asked "Is this entirely your own work?". I think the correct answer is "This work contains the work of others", because the stones were made by Gunter Demnig.
Since I don't know, whether Mr. Demnig has a copyright protection, the wizard says: Do not upload.
But there are alreay so many pictures of Stolpersteine here.
What is the correct approach?
Tdiet (talk) 21:36, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tdiet, thank you for asking this question.
Commons:Freedom of panorama may apply and each country has their own rules about this.
If the stones are in Germany COM:FOP Germany indicates that if they are in public and permanent then they can be used. {{FoP-Germany}} should be placed on the file page. Also US copyright needs to be considered, but that is beyond my abilities.
The Upload Wizard option "Yes, this work is not protected by copright law" could be used and you can add "{{FoP-Germany}}" at the next step in the "Any other information you want to add" while mentioning it is Demnig's work.
Photos in other countries may need a different evaluation.
Perhaps every file in the category should get tagged if they feature an artwork.
These are my thoughts, my Commons colleagues may correct me. Commander Keane (talk) 04:56, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Are these flags considered to be in the public domain? I'm not sure if they're actually official or if they're just used de facto. Using historic photos from a university website.

[edit]

Hello! Is it permissible to upload a historic photo downloaded from a university webpage? I'm specifically interested in uploading a photo of Robert Gonzales (from the page linked below), the founding editor of The Daily Gamecock, to include on The Daily Gamecock Wiki page.

[3]https://sc.edu/study/colleges_schools/cic/journalism_and_mass_communications/about/centennial_legacy/sjmc_history_timeline.php Matthewsixone (talk) 19:03, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Matthewsixone: Hi, and welcome. Evidently, from that page (on which there are three potential photos shown), each photo was probably taken and published in the same year, and the staff of the University of South Carolina College of Information and Communications knows who took it, but they're not giving credit. That whole page is "© University of South Carolina". So, per COM:HIRTLE the only appropriate tag for the 1965 photo will be {{PD-US-expired}} in 1965+120+1=2086. For the 1985 photo, {{PD-US-1978-89}} now (unless the copyright for it was registered within 5 years, then {{PD-old-70}} after 70 pma). And for the 1995 photo, 2116 (unless the copyright for it was registered within 5 years, then {{PD-old-70}} after 70 pma).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:47, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G. I think @Matthewsixone was referring to the Robert Gonzales image, which is the second image in the first section below, seen here: [4]. Tvpuppy (talk) 22:20, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Tvpuppy: I see. A version which shows more of his jacket is here, and added to his death 19 Dec 1916 (aged 28) per this findagrave memorial indicates that the photo must have been taken before then, so we only have to wait until 1916+120+1=2037 to use {{PD-US-expired}}.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:54, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both for your help with this! So in a case like this where the copyright does still apply, would I be able to upload the photo if I secured written permission from the university?
Also, do all of the same rules apply for screenshots? For instance, if I were to screenshot and crop his photo from the '08 yearbook (linked below), would I just need permission (in this case from University of South Carolina Archives)?
https://digital.tcl.sc.edu/digital/collection/garnetblack/id/40292 Matthewsixone (talk) 01:06, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Matthewsixone: You would need a free license (not just permission to use on Commons or Wikipedia; Commons doesn't accept unfree content), and you'd need that from the holder of the copyright (which quite likely is not the university). If the copyright-holder wants to grant a free license (I recommend {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} as the most "conservative" that we consider free), they need to send email to that effect as explained at COM:VRT. - Jmabel ! talk 04:17, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Matthewsixone: The university claims a copyright and all rights reserved on the 1908 publication, so you decide if you think you might get in trouble with the university, but as far as the policy of Commons is concerned, Commons does not require any permission to upload a copy of a photo published in 1908 in a publication that did not have a copyright notice. If you upload that photo, you could use for status template something like {{PD-Art|PD-US-expired}}. Technically, it could be "PD-US-no notice", but the wording of the templates seem to orient to the template "expired". -- Asclepias (talk) 14:26, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and welcome @GuesanLoyalist. If they are not your work, you cannot upload them to Commons without permission of the copyright holders. The fact that copyright violations on YouTube weren’t taken down does not mean it’s a free pass to also commit the same copyright violations. See Commons:Copyright rules for a detailed explanation of what content is allowed on Commons. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 03:44, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you too for asking your question here. It’s always a good practice to ask before upload if you have doubts on the copyright status of images. Tvpuppy (talk) 04:04, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How do try, except, finally, and raise work in Python?

[edit]

In Python, exception handling is managed using try, except, finally, and raise. try: This block contains the code that may cause an exception. If an error occurs, Python stops executing the code inside try and looks for an appropriate except block. except: This block catches and handles specific exceptions that occur in the try block. You can have multiple except blocks to handle different types of errors separately. finally: This block always executes, regardless of whether an exception occurred or not. It is commonly used for cleanup operations like closing files or releasing resources. raise: This keyword is used to manually trigger an exception. Photograph that is part Black and White and Part Color

[edit]

I have a black and white photograph that is part B&W and a very small part in color. No changes have been made to the photographic content, except that a large part of it was changed from color to B&W. Is this kind of picture acceptable in the Wiki Loves Folklore photographic contest? Teacher Richard (talk) 06:43, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@AjarnRichard, I didn't see any general notes about digital manipulation (eg colour/b&w) in the rules or judging criteria listed at Commons:Wiki Loves Folklore 2025/Rules. I think it is up to the judges to evaluate each photo.
Commons:Wiki Loves Folklore 2025/Contact lists some place you can raise concerns and for a particular entrance country, scroll to the bottom of Commons:Wiki Loves Folklore 2025/Organize and you can contact your local team.
Be sure to note any manipulation in the file's description and you might consider uploading the colour version too if that will be useful for any Wikimedia projects.
If you don't have a local team you are still welcome to upload files for international entry. Commander Keane (talk) 10:45, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hajime Fujii image

[edit]

Hi! I have just created the pt:Hajime Fujii article, the biography of a Japanese kamikaze pilot born in 1915 and dead during the WWII Okinawa battle, in 1945. I have been creating kamikaze pilot articles for some time now, and there is usually a Commons photo of the pilot to illustrate the text, except in this case. I talked to my mentor in the Portuguese wikipedia, who told me maybe it would be the case for using {{PD-Japan-oldphoto}}, and advised me to ask for help here.

There are images of Fujii available over the internet, for example, at Kamikaze Images, and other sites, and I'd like to know, given that it's a person deceased since 1945, if it would be possible to add his picture in Commons, and how to do it (I have never dealt with this situation before). Any help will be much appreciated, so thanks in advance.

StoryCraftsman (talk) 14:45, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and welcome @StoryCraftsman. You are correct, given the pilot passed away before 1945, his photographs must have been created before 1947, so they are in public domain under the terms of {{PD-Japan-oldphoto}}. Here’s a detailed explanation:
  • Before the copyright terms for photographs was extended in Japan in 1970, photographs enter public domain 10+3 years after their first publish. This means photographs in Japan published before 1957 entered public domain in 1970.
  • Also, photographs that were unpublished entered public domain 10+3 years after the creation, but if they were published anytime within 10 years of creation, they still have 10+3 years of copyright protection starting from the year of publish. This means a photograph can have maximum 20+3 years of copyright protection if the publish date is unknown. Therefore, all photographs created before 1947 entered public domain in 1970.

@Tvpuppy thank you so much for your kind explanation. Using the appropriate tag I've uploaded the image. StoryCraftsman (talk) 16:34, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Domenico De Angelis

[edit]

Hello,

Somethings go wrong with this subject, because there are two artists with this namen one born 1735 en the other born in 1852. Recently someone changed the name of some of the categories concerning these to painters. See here. All the media files ended up in the main categorie: Domenico De Angelis. Containing works from both artist. To add more to the confusion is that there is also this already existing Category:Domenico De Angelis (19th-century painter).

The recently chosen name for the category for the artist born in 1852 is: Category:Domenico De Angelis (Italo-Brazilian painter). I have some doubts if this is correct because i believe that the artist is born in Italy and did also work in Brasil but i can't find a source that made clear he permanently lived there or gained the Brasilian nationality.

I don't feel confidant about my skills here in commons to try to clean-up this category structure so i hope someone can help me with this.

Kind Regards, Geerestein3 (talk) 17:33, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging @Sailko as they were the user who made those changes. Tvpuppy (talk) 18:34, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I just took the definition from Wikidata, if this is incorrect you shoudl fix Wikidata first. Secondly, in Category:Domenico De Angelis we can just put a note for the other category. I think (19th-century painter) and (Italo-Brazilian painter) are just the same person, we should merge them. --Sailko (talk) 18:42, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Sailko: Wikidata has distinct Domenico De Angelis (Q18663487) and Domenico De Angelis (Q15943290); I agree with you on the latter conflation, and that person is certainly Q15943290; [5] at least vouches for Brazilian nationality, but could be wrong; is there anything more you would need to fix this?
Additional remark: [6] (Getty) gives both Italian and Brazilian nationality but says Italian is "preferred." I'd say that even at best, that is enough of a quagmire that it shouldn't be part of a category name. - Jmabel ! talk 23:13, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your responses. I don't know how to fix assigning the correct category to media files after changes its name. Like i mentioned. This file now has the wrong painter assigned, and there are more examples. They were originally assigned to category:Domenico De Angelis (artist).

Second problem is that there are no two categories for Domenico De Angelis from 1852-1904. (19th-century painter) and (Italo-Brazilian painter). I think that should be just one. The correct name i do not have a specific preference and i do not no what the standard is here on commons. Personally i would go on the safe side and just use year of birth and year of death for both painters. --Geerestein3 (talk) 10:53, 22 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Something went wrong

[edit]

I have a photograph that I took myself - it is a piece of cameo glass that I made myself. The piece features Bob from Eyes as Big as Plates - which I have permission to recreate in glass. Corning Museum of Glass has recognized this piece in New Glass Review 39 - can you help me figure out what the Wikimedia Commons doesn't like it? It's an edited copy of the original with meta data intact (I think) Camerriman (talk) 01:02, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Remaking an Album Cover in Roblox Studio

[edit]

How do you do, fellow Wikipedians! (is it correct to call you guys Wikipedians?).

I wanted to Recreate the FE!N (By Travis Scott) Album cover in Roblox Studio But i am afraid that Roblox (Or Travis Scott, UMG, anyone involved tbh) would take legal action or copyright strike the article.

So, is it allowed to Remake the FE!N Album cover in Roblox Studio without any Negative Copyright Consequences?

Please and Thank you in Advance

I'm not a lawyer, but it seems to me that would necessarily be a derivative work. - Jmabel ! talk 18:22, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
See COM:DW. I'm not sure exactly what you're proposing, but I will note 2 things: 1) Commons doesn't accept copyrighted works unless explicitly free licensed by their original authors/copyright holders. 2) If someone thinks they've found a sneaky way to get around copyright, it probably is not ok either. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 19:09, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Our Movie Guide

[edit]

I have a question regarding the "Creative Commons Attribution licence (reuse allowed)" tag on the videos from the YouTube account Our Movie Guide [7] How is it that they can have "Creative Commons Attribution licence (reuse allowed)" but then in their captions they state "All rights, title and interest to the Materials, including the copyrights and trademarks therein, shall at all times be and remain with the studio and any other co-owner(s) of such copyrights and trademarks in the Materials". I'm just trying to understand the logic behind this, as all this copyright stuff is still relatively new to me. Maxwell Smart123321 09:31, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Maxwell Smart123321 this definitely not a full answer (others will chime in I imagine), but...
My understanding is that copyright is held by the creator; they control copying, distribution etc. And the creator can choose to licence their work any way they like.
I think an example would be Microsoft Windows. Microsoft holds the copyright, but chooses to licence use of the software - typically for money and under strict conditions.
When you follow the link on Youtube "Creative Commons Attribution licence (reuse allowed)" it takes you to this page with some details.
Commons:Licensing might help.
If your question was leading to "can I upload Our Movie Guide videos from Youtube to Commons" it can get interesting as we need to be sure that Our Movie Guide holds the copyright to be able to licence it. Recently many Vogue Taiwan CC licenced Youtube videos were deleted as they didn't hold the copyright (discussion). If Our Movie Guide videos include clips of movies, posters, or other copyrighted works belonging to others we can't accept them. Commons:YouTube files has some uploading tips.
Incidentally, for those following, here is an example Youtube video from Our Movie Guide with this situation. You can only see the licence link in desktop, it is in the description. Commander Keane (talk) 11:06, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Maxwell Smart123321: Given that OMG does not hold any copyright on the materials they distribute on their channel, and they acknowledge that they don't, a free license would make sense only if the actual copyright owners, likely the movie studios or someone else, has issued that same free license in the first place. OMG redistributes material distributed by EPK.TV, who itself distributes press kits for studios. I don't know how accurate or mistaken the license tags at OMG might be. IMHO, a license tag at OMG should not be taken as a fact unless there is evidence that the material was published with the free license by the copyright owner. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:25, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
See also Commons:Deletion requests/Files from Our Movie Guide. Commons seems to have many other files from that channel. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:59, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Permission for publishing images of paintings

[edit]

Hello I'm creating an entry for an important Spanish painter, but when I was about to upload some pictures of his paintings I read that an explicit permission is required. The painter is fortunately still alive and I can contact him but I need to know in what way or format do you need his permission to publish images of his own paintings... a form? a document stating this permission with some kind of analog or digital signature attached? many thanks! Unable to Upload High Quality Images

[edit]

.

Hello,

I have recently added File:Map of North Campus, University of Delhi.jpg. However, in the uploaded pic the names are not visible, while they are clearly visible in my gallery. I don't understand the problem: I have tried uploading both by Commons Android and Firefoxwith the same result. KhubsuratInsaan (talk) 15:14, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and welcome @KhubsuratInsaan. The quality of the photo appears fine to me, since it’s 2,074 × 4,608. Are you sure you are looking at the correct version of the image? Usually the preview version has a lower quality than the actual image. The original version is here: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9a/Map_of_North_Campus%2C_University_of_Delhi.jpg
Tvpuppy (talk) 16:13, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
oh thanks. I might have been looking at the preview then. the orginal does looks fine. KhubsuratInsaan (talk) 16:25, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have in my archives a signature from John Buchanan (Canadian politician), 20th Premier of Nova Scotia. I thought it would be cool to scan and upload this to the commons so that I can then put it on the corresponding Wikipedia page, but I'm not sure exactly how the copyright around this would work. Buchanan died in 2019, but are signatures in Canada even subject to copyright to begin with? If it's okay to post, would I upload it as "own work" because I created the scan, or would I attribute it to John Buchanan given that it's his signature? Thank you, MediaKyle (talk) 22:48, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Virtually no signature can be copyrighted in Canada; unless it is something way out of the ordinary, it is in the public domain, {{PD-signature}}
A scan does not create any new rights, Buchanan remains the author of his own signature.
If you don't have a more accurate date, just use {{other date|before|2019-10-03}}. - Jmabel ! talk 00:31, 22 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
