«Вікі любить Землю» 2025: долучайтесь до Місячника ілюстрування української природи та отримуйте призи!
[edit]
- проілюструйте принаймні одну статтю української Вікіпедії чи один елемент Вікіданих фотографією з конкурсу «Вікі любить Землю»;
- додайте себе у розділ «Учасники та внесок» на сторінці проєкту;
Category:Categories with object location coordinates
[edit]Hi Auntof6, you added a template or category to this (to be "automatically filled") category page. Do you know, if there is any chance to get the category really filled with categories, which have an object location? Or was the category just forgotten to be deleted because it was to complicated to fill or whatever happend :-) ? Or do you at least know whom to ask? -- Schusch (talk) 14:56, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
Deletions after category renames (Noordwijk by year)
[edit]Re: Category:1966 in Noordwijk et al.
There has recently been a bulk rename of Category:1966 in Noordwijk to Category:1966 in Noordwijk, South Holland, and many others, as this structure ripples off into many related other categories. Unsurprisingly, this massive rename was undiscussed and led to chaos elsewhere requiring much wasted time to clean it all up. Such is Commons editing.
However you have also deleted all the original categories (which I presume the Move tool would have converted to category redirects). This is against our long-established policy: where categories have been long-term stable for years, we leave the redirects in place to avoid link breakage. Your comment "(incorrectly named) duplicate" is also insulting. These are not duplicates (presumably they're redirects, if the Move was done correctly). They're certainly not "incorrectly named".
The new name is incorrect and is problematic. That's why they were called "Noordwijk" in the first place. It's wrong on two counts. Firstly this disambiguation [sic] isn't needed. It isn't a disambiguation, there's no duplicate Noordwijk to overlap. Secondly, Noordwijk isn't in South Holland. It's in Zuid Holland. The appropriate language is Dutch. Given Commons' overwhelming use of English, it's a problem as to whether geographical entities should be named in their native language, or have English imposed upon them. Not using either neatly sidesteps that. Now they're all mislabelled. Andy Dingley (talk) 19:25, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Andy Dingley: I'm sorry for the problems. The categories I deleted had speedy delete requests on them, so I processed the requests. I didn't know there were any issues with them. If I recall correctly, yes, they were redirects. In my experience, sometimes redirects are kept after moves and sometimes they aren't.
- No insult was intended by the "incorrectly-named duplicate" text: that is standard text that the system generates. Please assume good faith.
- How can I help resolve this? I could restore the ones I deleted and remove the speedy requests (and notify the requestor about them being restored and why it's being done). Please let me know if you would like me to do that, and if there's anything else I can do to help.
- Again, I'm sorry for causing any issues. -- Auntof6 (talk) 21:44, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- It's not important. The main problems are elsewhere. But a speedy delete request isn't mandatory. Sometimes we don't need to delete these. Andy Dingley (talk) 22:15, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
Pleasee
[edit]Can you revert the move I did and all the cat a lot edit. I am really sorry if this inconvince you, but please help Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 11:36, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
- I didn’t know the move would not work. So sorry Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 11:36, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Cactusisme: You need to be more specific.
- There's a way with Cat-a-lot to revert what you did if you haven't left the page or made any other changes. Is that maybe the case? -- Auntof6 (talk) 11:37, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
- If you see my history you would see Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 12:41, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
- I removed them from the category and nominated page for deletion can you please check Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 12:46, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
- Don't make me guess from looking at your history. If you want someone to help you, you need to give them the information they need to do that.
- General information someone would need:
- What were you trying to do, and with what categories/files/pages/whatever?
- How many categories/files/pages/whatever were involved?
- What did you do and how did you do it?
- When did you do it? Give specific date/time(s).
- What did you expect would happen?
- What actually happened, including what messages did you see, if any?
- What, if anything, have you already done to try to fix it?
- Specifics for this issue in addition to the above:
- What exactly do you want me to check? That "they" (whatever that refers to) are gone from a category? That your delete nomination worked?
- I do see that you were doing something with Category:September 2011 in Córdoba, Spain. That category is currently blanked although it contains files. You need to fix that. -- Auntof6 (talk) 20:04, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Auntof6 I would like to add the deleted content from Category:September 2011 in Córdoba to that. That’s why I need you help. Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 22:36, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Auntof6 I think I fixed Category:September 2011 in Córdoba, Spain Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 04:41, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Cactusisme: Yes, the category looks OK now.
- So is there still something you need to do? Do you still need to add things to this category? You can use Cat-a-lot from your list of contributions. Here are the steps:
- Find the files in your contributions
- Open Cat-a-lot by clicking on the link in the lower right corner
- Type in the name of the category, "September 2011 in Córdoba, Spain" and hit enter
- Select each item in your contributions that you want to add to that category (if the items are on more than one page, you have to process one page at a time)
- In the Cat-a-lot window, click on the plus sign across from the category you want to add the files to. That will add the files to the category.
- To process files on more than one page, do the following before selecting files:
- Click on "older 100" (or whatever number of things you display per page in your contributions)
- The category you entered above will still be in the Cat-a-lot window. put your cursor there and press enter to re-activate that category
- Repeat the last two steps from above
- For future reference, if you ever make a change with Cat-a-lot and then realize that it was a mistake, you can undo it as long as you don't do anything else first. There should be a link in the Cat-a-lot window labelled "revert" or something like that (it's NOT the "invert" link): just click on that and it will undo the last change(s) you made.
- Hope that helps. Auntof6 (talk) 04:52, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, I didn't remove anything from that category, only added a category, thus they remained in it. Thanks for the guidance. Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 09:47, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
- Can you tell what do we do here? Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 08:14, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Cactusisme: I thought it was taken care of. What still needs to be done? -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:16, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
- No, not that. Like what do we do here on commons. Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 08:17, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
- The purpose of Commons is to store and manage media files. There are a lot of different things to do to support that. If you're looking for something to do, tell me what you like doing on Wikipedia and I can tell you if there's something equivalent here.
- Note that things here can be quite different from the Wikipedias, which makes sense since the things being managed are files instead of articles. Because of that, I'd recommend getting a bit familiar with this site before you jump in and do anything. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:33, 6 March 2025 (UTC)

- You fix it by moving the category with the qualified name back to the original name. If you do it any other way, you lose the edit history.
- Unfortunately, you can't do that because the original category exists, so I will move it for you. -- Auntof6 (talk) 09:10, 6 March 2025 (UTC)

Stop vandalizing
[edit]Stop vandalizing the category "events in Milan", Thank you. User:G.dallorto (talk) 21:56, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
- @G.dallorto: I don't know what you're referring to. It doesn't look like I've ever touched that category. In fact, it hasn't been touched since August last year. -- Auntof6 (talk) 00:35, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
- If I got wrong I ask for your forgiveness. I thought I had read your name in the log, perhaps I misread. I am sorry. User:G.dallorto (talk) 00:56, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
- Auntof6, you deleted some categories having to do with "events in Milan" that I had nominated for speedy deletion as part of the consensus in Commons:Categories for discussion/2025/03/Category:Events in Italy by region by year and another CfD. If anything, G.dallorto is the one committing vandalism here by repeatedly restoring them. Since we're all here anyway, can you please tell him to stop doing it? Thanks. --Adamant1 (talk) 02:38, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Adamant1: Can you give me one or more specific categories I deleted that G.dallorto recreated? I looked at some of the categories in question, and I definitely see that there are more of these categories that should be gone.
- As for consensus: I do see consensus in that discussion, but normally I think consensus should not be acted on until a discussion is closed. One thing I do see just from looking a little bit is that general music categories are included under events: they should not be. I suspect if that connection was undone, a lot of the categories would be empty and could be deleted regardless of what happens with the discussion. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:58, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
- Category:1793 events in Milan appears to be one. A lot of the categories were recreated, redeleted by another admin, and then recreated again. So I can't tell what administrator deleted which categories or in what order at this point. Regardless, the categories were originally deleted due to being empty because of the whole thing you bring up that general music categories shouldn't be under ones for events. So they were deleted for other reasons then the CfD, which I assume is fine. I agree that a consensus should not be acted on until a discussion is closed, but from my understanding that doesn't mean categories related to the CfD can't be deleted for other reasons in the meantime. Let alone would it be valid for G.dallorto to repeatedly recreate said categories purely because of the CfD existing. --Adamant1 (talk) 11:01, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
- @G.dallorto: I see where you recreated some categories I deleted. It would be helpful if you explain your thinking in recreating them.
- In the meantime, I think I'll look at taking general music categories out of the events categories, because they don't belong there. Doing that will probably empty some categories, which I will delete. This is not related to the discussion that Adamant1 linked to above, because it would need to be done whether or not the categories being discussed are kept. Please don't recreate any events categories unless there is something to put in them that is for actual events.
- If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 17:08, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
